Iran and US on collision course as nuclear talks falter

Ali Khamenei, the highest spiritual and political leader of Iran, issued a warning on Monday that the US will be targeted if President Donald Trump's threats are executed. Trump announced that if Iran fails to reach an agreement on its nuclear program, there will be bombings "the likes of which they have never seen before."

In a Sunday interview with NBC, US President Donald Trump shared his stance on Iran. — If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing. It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before — stated Trump. His words were a response to Iran's refusal to engage in negotiations regarding the nuclear program.

Trump also announced that in addition to bombings, the US will impose sanctions on countries purchasing oil from Iran.

It's important to recall that in mid-March, President Trump sent a letter to Iran proposing negotiations for a new nuclear deal, giving the Iranian authorities two months to decide. In the letter, Trump warned that if the proposal is rejected, the US will tighten sanctions on Iran as part of the "maximum pressure" campaign.

Iran refuses to talk

The 2015 agreement eased international sanctions in exchange for Iran limiting its nuclear program.

Iranian President Masud Pezeszkian announced that his country will not agree to direct talks with the US regarding the nuclear program. — We don’t avoid talks; it’s the breach of promises that has caused issues for us so far. They must prove that they can build trust, — said Pezeszkian at a government meeting. Iran communicated its response through Oman, leaving the possibility of indirect talks open.
