Since the iPhone 11's launch in 2019, Apple has preserved its square camera module design across its lineup, including base models and the advanced Pro and Pro Max series. However, it now appears that the manufacturer plans to implement noticeable differences in the series' appearance.
Sonny Dickson, a well-known blogger, shared photos on platform X (previously Twitter) that are believed to showcase iPhone 16, 16 Pro, 16 Plus, and 16 Pro Max models. Accessory makers frequently use these dummy models to adapt their products, like cases or screen protectors, to new dimensions.
Prior leaks suggest that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will move away from the square camera module, adopting an elongated shape instead. Additionally, the camera lenses, previously arranged diagonally, are expected to be aligned in a straight line. This redesign is likely directed at enabling standard models to record 3D movies, a feature once exclusive to Pro versions. This new spherical video functionality is tailored for the Vision Pro glasses.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are also set to inherit the universal Action Button from the iPhone 15 Pro models, replacing the iconic ring/silent switch. A new button is speculated to be featured on the opposite side of the device, possibly functioning as a physical camera shutter.
While the base models are undergoing a redesign, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max may not see significant design changes. Leaks indicate that these models will retain the square camera module with its traditional lens layout for the sixth consecutive year. However, the screen sizes for these models are expected to increase from 6.1 and 6.7 inches to 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively.
The eagerly-awaited iPhone 16 series is projected to debut in September, stirring excitement among Apple enthusiasts and the tech community.
