Optical illusions often create a buzz on the internet. These images can usually be interpreted in many ways, which means that everyone perceives something different in them.

Today's optical illusion is a perfect example of this. The image stirring controversy appears simple. It has two square blocks, set against a colorful background, tilted at contrasting angles.

Are they the same or different?

This seemingly simple image has attracted massive interest. That's because those sharing the optical illusion on social media claim that both blocks are the same color. Yet, many dispute this assertion, arguing that the lower block is white while the upper one is grey. So, what's your opinion - are the blocks identical or different in color?

Deciphering this optical illusion

If you obscure the center of the image, you will notice that the blocks are indeed the same color. The entire argument is essentially about light, shadow, and our perception of them. "Same color, different light, learn, my friend," one commentator put it. "That's how light works," added another.

Despite social media platforms being deluged with explanations on how to interpret the image, many still assert that the lower block is brighter. Even diagrams elucidating the optical illusion phenomenon fail to convince them.

Why are optical illusions so provocative?

Optical illusions typically hinge on a misunderstanding of light, shadow, or colors. Often, these elements mislead our minds into "seeing" something entirely different from what the image actually portrays. The illusion we fall for is due to a disruption in our perception mechanism, which usually aids our sight. Intriguingly, most people ignore the fact that our brains can err and stick rigidly to their interpretation of the visuals, triggering heated debates online.
