Previously, Instagram's core functionality was centered around displaying photos and videos from followed accounts, arranged in chronological order. The recent modifications to the algorithm, however, have shifted focus from the content's source to maintaining user interest. This change led to a noticeable elevation of aggregated content over original creations, giving the impression that Instagram was becoming cluttered with recycled content. Recognizing this issue, Instagram has decided to act.

Upcoming adjustments to the Instagram algorithm

In response to feedback, Instagram reveals it has been refining its algorithm for several months, aiming to better highlight smaller creators and discourage the redistribution of others' content without significant alterations. The forthcoming adjustments are designed with these key objectives:

  • When the algorithm spots multiple instances of the same content, it will prioritize and promote the original, notifying the author of the duplication;
  • Content that incorporates parts of previously published materials will now include links to the original posts;
  • Accounts that have shared content from other profiles at least ten times within the past month will not be recommended to users who don't already follow them.

This strategy targets accounts that frequently publish content from others without modification. Activities such as commenting on, analyzing, or creating parodies of existing posts will remain unaffected by these changes.

Instagram is optimistic that these updates, set to roll out in the following months, will significantly improve the platform's content landscape.
