Mount Yamantau, the highest peak of the Southern Ural, conceals a mysterious bunker beneath it, which may function as a backup capital for Russia. This installation, under construction since the 1970s, is intended to provide security for Russian authorities during crisis situations.

Mysterious construction work

Construction work under Yamantau began in the 1970s and continued despite economic difficulties during Boris Yeltsin's presidency. In 1996, American intelligence reported the existence of a massive bunker that could accommodate up to 60,000 people, including Russian elites.

Yamantau not only serves as a backup capital but is also part of the "Dead Hand" system, which ensures an automatic response by strategic nuclear forces if command centers are destroyed. This is a key element of the Russian defense system.

Confirmations from various sources

Although the details of its operation are unknown, the existence of the installation under Yamantau was confirmed by former Russian Defense Minister, Marshal Igor Sergeyev. Additionally, Gen. Eugene E. Habiger of the U.S. Strategic Command, commenting on the Yamantau situation, stated that it's a very large complex and Americans estimate there are millions of square feet of underground facilities. Unfortunately, they had no idea what the Russians are doing there

The Russian Ministry of Defense, naturally, does not provide any information regarding installations related to the country's security. In the 1990s, Minister Igor Rodionov emphasized that there is no practice of informing foreign media about such projects. This only intensifies the mystery surrounding Yamantau.
