A billion dollars in record time. No film recently has achieved what the creators of "Inside Out 2" did. A powerful wave of people flocked to the cinemas.

Last year, Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" joined the "Hollywood Billionaires Club." After a global marketing frenzy with the simultaneous premiere of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," Margot Robbie's film grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, placing it among the 53 films with the best box office results in history. This year's biggest hit seemed to be the second part of "Dune." But then came a tale about emotions.
"Inside Out 2" outperforms Dune
"Dune: Part Two" premiered at the end of February and grossed $712 million in cinemas. Until recently, it was the biggest hit of 2024. "I am disappointed that ‘Dune 2' remains number one. I hope there will soon be titles that achieve financial success and that the summer box office will improve significantly." Director Denis Villeneuve said that we need films that are cinematic experiences and fully utilize the impact of the big screen.
Villeneuve's wish came true. On June 12, "Inside Out 2," directed by Kelsey Mann and featuring voices from Amy Pohler, Maya Hawke, and Tony Hale, was released in cinemas worldwide. The film's budget was $200 million, and it achieved remarkable success in cinemas.
No one expected this. In just 19 days, the animation about a girl and her emotions grossed $1.015 billion. It earned $469.3 million in the USA, while the rest of the world brought in $545.5 million. It's worth noting that the first part of the story achieved $858.8 million at the box office.
Until now, we have witnessed rather sad financial failures and disappointments. Films like "Stuntman," "Fantastic Creatures," "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," and "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" did not make as much of an impression on viewers as "Inside Out 2."
Let's add that the highest-grossing film of the decade remains "Avatar" from 2009, which grossed $2.9 billion. In second place is "Avengers: Endgame" with $2.7 billion. The third spot on the podium belongs to the second part of "Avatar" from 2022, which grossed $2.3 billion in cinemas. On the list of 54 (including the new animation) films that made vast amounts of money are productions such as "Avengers: Infinity War," "Titanic," "Jurassic World," "The Lion King," "Top Gun: Maverick," and "Frozen 2."
