Indian Zorawar tank triumphs where Russian T‑90s falter
The Indian Zorawar tank has successfully passed tests in extreme conditions in Ladakh, where the Russian T-90s failed, reports the Ukrainian portal Defense Express.
Development of the Zorawar tank began in India in 2020 when New Delhi was in discussions with the Russian Federation about purchasing military equipment. At that time, India showed interest in the light Sprut SMD1 tanks equipped with 125 mm caliber guns.
Ultimately, India decided to pursue a domestic tank project. The Zorawar, as it is called, became valuable not just for enhancing India's combat capabilities but also attracted attention globally. During the Dubai Airshow 2023, the Russian Federation expressed interest in the Indian tank. Defense Express now reports that India is continuing its development and has announced the successful completion of tank tests.
Successful test of the Indian tank
The Indian Zorawar tank, designed for combat in challenging conditions, successfully passed tests in Ladakh at an altitude of over 13,800 feet. These tests, as reported by Defence-Uua, confirmed its reliability and precision. This marks the second phase of trials after initial testing in the desert in September.
Zorawar, weighing 55,000 pounds, incorporates proven technologies, including a chassis from the Korean K9 howitzer and a Cummins engine with 760 horsepower. Belgian manufacturer Cockerill provides the tank's turret. The final assembly is handled by the Indian company Larsen & Toubro, which showcases the local contribution to the project.
The decision to develop Zorawar followed the underperformance of the Russian T-90s in Ladakh. India plans to acquire 350 units, with 59 already ordered. The tank is set to compete with the Chinese Type 15, which is slightly heavier and more numerous. Zorawar is intended to meet the needs of the Indian army in the region.
