Law enforcement confirmed that the victim was Imam Hassan Sharif, who had served in his role for nearly five years.

According to the Public Safety Director, the imam of the Masjid Muhammad-Newark mosque was rapidly transported to University Hospital in a critical condition. Prosecutors later confirmed that Sharif succumbed to his injuries.

Matthew Platkin, the Attorney General of New Jersey, stated in a press conference Wednesday afternoon that there was no evidence thus far suggesting that it was a hate crime or an act of terrorism. However, he recognized the palpable sense of apprehension and fear growing among New Jersey residents.

"At this stage of our investigation, we've not found any information that suggests the motive of the crime was driven by prejudice," Platkin stated. "We will explore every possible lead to ensure justice is served for the offender or offenders."
