Frightening discovery: a starving, beaten 8-year-old locked in a room
On March 29, 2022, the boy's mother made a distress call to services, telling them that her son was "unresponsive and cold". Upon arrival at their Peoria home, paramedics and police officers stumbled upon a gruesome sight.
Pale and frail, the young boy weighed a mere 29 pounds. He was found secluded in a locked room, covered in urine and feces. Marks of physical abuse decorated his face, body, arms, and legs - the 'Daily Mail' reports.
Notably, a directive was found on Navin's bedroom door, intended for his sibling. "Do not give Navin any food or drinks. Do not let him leave the room. He has everything he needs until I wake up" - read the note.
A door without a doorknob; a bed without a blanket
The door to the 8-year-old boy's room did not have a doorknob. Interestingly, a rope was found in the hallway - later identified as the child's method to secure the bedroom door so that he could not escape.
The condition of the boy's room was decried by the prosecutors as "deplorable and distressing". It was only equipped with a dirty bed that lacked any form of bedding or even a blanket. In contrast, the rest of the house on North Gale Avenue had a well-stocked kitchen and comfortable furnishings.
Detective Roberto Vasquez, who was at the scene, related that the smell from the boy's room was indescribably foul. It turned out that Navin had been using the closet as a latrine.
After the intervention from social services, Navin was promptly transported to the hospital. Regrettably, he passed away that same day. The autopsy report indicated chronic malnutrition to the point of complete adipose tissue depletion and limited mobility due to muscle wasting.
Forensic pathologist Amanda Youmans concluded that Navin suffered from cardiac arrest. His death was attributed to underdevelopment as a result of malnutrition, as reported by 'Daily Mail'.
Navin's parents, Stephanie Jones, 37, and Brandon Walker, 41, were brought to court. On Thursday, December 14, Stephanie Jones accepted a plea deal from the prosecution, pleading guilty to first-degree murder. The plea deal grants her a 20-year prison term instead of a possible life sentence. The sentence will be passed in February of next year.
Jones also agreed to testify against Walker, her co-defendant. His trial is currently underway, and he faces a potential life sentence if found guilty.
