The event, which had a tragic ending, unfolded on July 6 in Springfield. Sean Grayson, a 30-year-old deputy sheriff, and his colleague were called to Sonya Massey's house after she reported an unknown person lurking in the area.

Things took an unexpected turn. According to the footage released by the Illinois police, the officers entered Massey's home after searching the area. The video shows Massey approaching the stove where there was a pot of boiling water. She picked it up.

Even though she did not threaten the officers and her behavior was not aggressive, the officers drew their weapons. Grayson began yelling for her to drop the pot. Massey apologized and started to bend down slowly. Suddenly, three shots were fired. Grayson shot the 36-year-old woman in the head, resulting in her death.

The officer was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was stripped of his duties in the police force. He is in custody and will remain there until August 26, when the next court hearing is scheduled.

Officer shot a Black woman. Outrage in the USA

The death of 36-year-old Sonya Massey is another case that has outraged the United States. It is another instance where a white officer has killed a Black person. This is particularly shocking as Massey did not threaten the officers during the incident and showed no signs of intending to attack them. President Joe Biden addressed the woman's murder.

"Sonya Massey, a beloved mother, friend, daughter, and young Black woman, should be alive today. Sonya’s death at the hands of a police officer reminds us that all too often Black Americans face fears for their safety in ways many of the rest of us do not," said the President.

Let's recall that in 2020, in Chicago, the capital of Illinois, there was an incident that resulted in the death of George Floyd. Floyd was suffocated by an officer, which led to changes in American law regarding the use of force by authorities—however, the police reform named after Floyd has still not been implemented.
