The Icelandic Meteorological Institute reported that the eruption created a fissure between 1.5 and 2 miles in length. Minor earthquakes preceded the eruption, indicating increased seismic activity in the region.
Another volcanic eruption on the peninsula
This is already the tenth volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021, with the previous one occurring at the end of August.
Due to the threat, about 60 people were evacuated from Grindavik. Most residents did not return after earlier damage caused by lava. The town, currently secured with a protective barrier, only reopened in October.
The nearby geothermal spa, popular among tourists, has also been evacuated and closed, including the Blue Lagoon Hotel. However, the operator of Keflavik International Airport, Isavia, announced that the volcanic eruption did not affect air traffic, and flights are proceeding as scheduled.
