Hyundai's new solution for harsh winters: Tire with built-in chain

No need to install chains on your car wheels manually; Hyundai is pioneering a new technology that accomplishes just that. It may not be an actual chain, but the patented system does act exactly like one.

Although severe and lengthy winters are not typical in our area, snow can impede road travel in mountainous regions. In some places, it is mandatory to install chains on at least two drive wheels of a vehicle when the roads are covered in snow.

Naturally, installing chains on tires means stopping, braving the cold, and fitting the chains. Only then can the journey resume. Is there a way to simplify this process? Hyundai seems to think so. Their new prototype might be an exceptionally convenient alternative.

The Korean automaker has showcased a video displaying its patent: a chain built into a tire. Activated from the comfort of the driver's seat, this ingenious system lets the driver use chains without having to manually install them. But how does this unique Hyundai tire function?

The driver sends an electrical signal to the tire by opting for the suitable option from the infotainment module. Once the circuit is powered, a special memory step emerges from a gap in the tire. This system of multiple such elements, shaped like the letter J, is designed to act just like a manually fitted tire chain.

An intriguing feature of this innovation is that the tire could also indicate when it needs to be replaced. When the protruding elements consistently touch the asphalt, it would signal that the tread is excessively worn and a new set of tires is required.

"Motor1" reports that Hyundai filed for the said patent in its native South Korea, as well as in the United States. Hyundai assures that they intend to begin mass production of this tire, provided everything goes as planned. The initial cost of this technology might be high, but there will certainly be those who would be eager to try out these tires.
