Millions of residents along a nearly 300-mile stretch of Florida's coast have been ordered to evacuate, and authorities continue to issue increasingly alarming warnings.
American media report that the impact of the incoming hurricane is now clearly being felt in Florida. The first videos recorded by people in the affected areas are coming in.
"Hurricane Milton is spawning tornadoes all over Florida just hours before the monster storm is set to make landfall," reports Fox News.
In a Reuters agency video, you can see how quickly the storm is approaching Sarasota. For several hours, a pool located about thirty yards from the shoreline was underwater.
Heavy rain is falling in the suburbs of Orlando.
Satellite images published by NOAA Satellites show numerous lightning strikes accompanying the approaching hurricane.
In an interview with CNN, Sandra Tapfumaneyi, the chief of emergency management for Sarasota County, warned that those who choose to stay on the barrier islands south of Tampa may not survive the incoming storm with its high waves. "If you decide to stay, make sure you have a life jacket on hand," appealed Tapfumaneyi.
According to forecasts, about 12 to 16 inches of rain may fall during Hurricane Milton's onslaught.
