Hurricane John struck Mexico's Pacific coast on Tuesday, September 24, as a Category 3 hurricane. After a brief weakening and retreat over the waters, it returned on Sunday as a dangerous tropical storm.
Hurricane struck Mexico for the second time
The AFP agency reported the tragic effects of Hurricane John's return to the Mexican coast. According to their report, citing local authorities, at least 16 people have died. There are also missing individuals, leading some local media to report as many as 29 victims of the natural disaster.
On Sunday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that the worst-hit area is the state of Guerrero. Victims were also recorded in the neighboring state of Oaxaca.
Mexicans frightened
The storm caused significant damage and led to panic in the resort town of Acapulco. Residents and tourists still remember Hurricane Otis, which, in October 2023, as a Category 5 hurricane, caused significant destruction and dozens of fatalities. The situation troubles both the residents of the endangered areas and the businesses operating there. Fear is also growing due to the increasing frequency of hurricanes in these regions, as confirmed by meteorologists.
Future President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she will visit Guerrero on October 2, the day after her inauguration.
