How to quickly transfer large files online: A complete guide

Surprisingly, transferring files over the internet doesn't always have to be simple. We cannot send the data as an email attachment if it is several gigabytes in size. This guide shows you how to transfer large files online quickly.

Whether for private or company files, when wanting to send files over the internet, you can encounter various problems. One of the most common limitations is the maximum file size that we can attach to an email message as an attachment. This often prevents the transfer of high-resolution photos, videos, or other large files.

However, many solutions allow you to quickly and safely transfer large files without paying fees. These include various types of FTP servers, compressing and splitting data into smaller parts, or using cloud storage services.

One option is a platform that, unlike the previously mentioned methods, does not require the user to register, configure, or install dedicated applications. We are talking about the WeTransfer service, which transfers large files directly from the web browser.

WeTransfer - what is it and what options does it offer?

WeTransfer is a service that allows data storage in available cloud space. Sharing is possible thanks to generated links sent to any specified email address.

In the free version, WeTransfer can store 2 GB of data for 7 days and a maximum of 20 downloads per transfer. After purchasing a paid subscription, these limitations are removed, and the maximum transfer size is 1 TB (approximately 1,024 GB). You can find more about the subscription plans and service costs on the official website.

How to send a large file over the internet?

To start transferring and sharing data via WeTransfer, open an internet browser on your computer and visit the service's official website.

In the section on the screen's left side, click Upload files or select folder and indicate the data to be shared. Then, provide basic information, such as the email address from which the link to the file(s) will be sent, the recipient's email address, and the title and content of the message.

WeTransfer also allows you to generate a link to the shared data without sending it via email. To confirm, click Send. The file transfer to the service's servers will begin, and a summary with the most essential information will be displayed.

There are more convenient methods for sending extensive data, and WeTransfer is recommended. If you want to share data in another way, such as a link from private cloud storage, it is worth using popular services like Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive. There are many ways to do this; if you have other recommendations, we invite you to discuss them.
