Geraniums are among the most popular balcony flowers. They are easy to cultivate and extremely impressive. Properly cared for, they delight the eye even until late autumn. If you want them to thrive on your balcony for a long time, prepare this simple nutrient solution.

Geraniums are plants from the geranium family. Worldwide, there are about 283 species of these flowers. Naturally, they occur in Africa and the Middle East but have also adapted to our climate. They decorate many balconies, terraces, and gardens. How do you care for geraniums to ensure they bloom for as long as possible? Learn the recipe for a homemade nutrient to make the flowers flourish until late autumn.

How to care for geraniums?

Geraniums are beautiful flowers that vary in color and size depending on the species. They bloom from May until the first frost. However, how they are cared for matters, and a sunny spot should be provided so the plants can develop properly.

Also, take care of the right soil. It should be fertile, well-draining, and slightly acidic. Remember to repot them into large pots with drainage after purchasing to prevent overwatering. Water them 2-3 times a week in spring and, in summer, even twice a day.

And what about fertilizers? For geraniums, you should have two different fertilizers. Each is used at a different time of year. In spring, you should nourish them with a nitrogen preparation, and in summer, with a potassium-phosphorus one to extend their blooming period.

Homemade plant nutrients are becoming increasingly popular. They usually utilize products that normally end up in the trash, such as coffee grounds or eggshells. Orange peels work best for geraniums, as they contain ingredients like potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. This combination will not only stimulate growth but also extend their blooming period.

How do you prepare fertilizer from orange peels? It's very simple. Collect peels from 2-3 oranges, then dry them in the oven or the sun. Once completely dry, grind them in a food processor or coffee grinder and mix them gently with the soil. Repeat this treatment monthly throughout spring and summer, and the geraniums will bloom until October.
