Hot dog potato casserole: A surprising delight for dinner

I want to introduce a recipe that might seem a bit controversial to dietary purists. Hot dogs as the main ingredient for dinner? This recipe could be considered unconventional, but the taste is worth the indulgence!

Hot dogs are a food product that still stirs up quite a bit of emotion. And rightly so! I'm not entirely convinced that we should rely on them for our health and fitness. However, we must acknowledge a certain obvious fact: there are hot dogs, and then there are... hot dogs. Those with a good, simple composition, high meat content (exclude any MSM) and as few "E" additives as possible are not too bad. I see nothing particularly dreadful about occasionally enjoying them—especially not just for breakfast.

Recently, I decided to try a recipe I had been considering for a long time: Potato Casserole with Hot Dogs. Does it sound controversial? Perhaps, but let's remember that a cheat day is allowed even in strict diets. That's exactly how I view this dish. It's simple, tasty, and inexpensive, and no one can convince me that it's some sort of culinary atrocity! But don't just take my word for it; try the recipe below and judge for yourself.

Potato Casserole with Hot Dogs

Ingredients:

  • 10.5 oz of good-quality hot dogs
  • 1.5 lbs of potatoes
  • 2 onions
  • 1 zucchini
  • 4 pickled cucumbers
  • 0.42 cup of tomato puree
  • 7 oz of block cheddar cheese
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Herbes de Provence
  • Oil for frying

Preparation method:

  1. Peel, wash, and boil the potatoes. They don't have to be completely soft; in fact, it's better if they're not. I prefer to parboil them rather than using them raw, as this way they mix better with the other ingredients. After draining, slice the potatoes.
  2. Chop the other vegetables: cut the zucchini into sticks, the onions into wedges, and the cucumbers into cubes.
  3. Also, cut the hot dogs into smaller pieces.
  4. Sauté all the vegetables (except the potatoes) and hot dogs in a small amount of oil.
  5. Pour the tomato puree mixed with water over them and season with salt, pepper, and Herbes de Provence.
  6. Half of the potatoes should be laid at the bottom of a baking dish. The vegetables and hot dogs should be placed on top, and then the remaining potatoes should be added.
  7. Sprinkle the top with grated cheese. Bake for 12 minutes at 356°F, and it's ready. Bon appétit!
