An inmate armed with a dangerous object has been holding five prison staff members hostage since Friday morning at a facility in Arles, located in southern France, according to the TF1 Info portal, which cited sources from within the prison. Security forces have been dispatched to the scene.

It's a dramatic situation in France. On Friday morning, an armed inmate took five staff members hostage at the prison in Arles in the south of the country. Reports from the TF1 Info portal indicate that security forces have been deployed to manage the situation.

Authorities have been attempting to control the scenario since Friday morning. Armed police officers and negotiators were immediately sent to the penitentiary in Arles, southern France.

Critical situation in Arles: Inmate takes hostages

The incident unfolded in the prison infirmary, where the inmate holds four nurses and a caregiver. His motives remain unknown.

It is, however, known that the inmate is serving an eight-year prison sentence for rape and has mental health issues.

He was transferred to the Arles facility in 2023 and has been serving his sentence there since then.

The TF1 Info portal, citing prison sources, reports that the situation remains tense, and efforts are being made to resolve the crisis as quickly as possible.
