Even though hops are mostly associated with alcohol, they are also excellent in making soothing homemade infusions. They substitute well for lemon balm tea, helping to clear the mind for a quiet sleep, and all without a trace of alcohol. An evening infusion will not only put a smile on your face the next morning but can also help ease digestive system issues like uncomfortable bloating.

An Introduction to Hops Infusion

The benefits of hop cones have been recognized since ancient times. Cultivated by the Greeks and Romans, a broth made from the cones was used as a remedy for insomnia, a stimulant for appetite, and a control measure against excessive sexual arousal.

These light green hop cones are covered in glandular hairs. These hairs produce lupulin, giving beer its distinct aroma and bitter taste. Furthermore, lupulin contains substances with healing properties utilized in herbal medicine.

The Benefits of Hops for Sleep

According to studies conducted by researchers from the Warsaw Medical University, the plant's compounds, such as methylbutenol and essential oil, show potential in treating depressive states and anxiety disorders.

It is the calming strength of hops that works on the nervous system. Hop cones help lessen tension and anxiety by reducing the activity of certain brain centers. This allows us to fall asleep more easily and diminishes anxiety levels.

Resolving Issues with an Infusion

The bitterness of the hops stimulates gastric juice secretion. This aids digestion, reducing the risk of bloating and other digestive tract problems. So, it may be a valuable ally for those who suffer from poor digestion, appetite loss, excessive intestinal gas, or painful bloating.

Wondering how to prepare the infusion? Just add a teaspoon of dried hop cones to boiled water and leave it to steep for about 10 minutes.

It is important to note that hops shouldn't be taken in conjunction with sedatives. It may enhance the sedative and soporific effects, possibly reducing concentration and motor coordination. Hence, it's ideal for drivers to steer clear of this tea. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid consuming hops as there are insufficient studies regarding the safety of hops for these groups.
