Foreign media outlets, including Hawaii News Now and People, reported the tragedy on Friday, December 22nd. That day, Theresa Cachuela went to a bank inside a shopping center in Honolulu. Her husband, 44-year-old Jason, unexpectedly showed up. He approached her in the parking lot and shot her in the head, instantly killing her. As local media stated, the tragedy unfolded before the couple's daughter. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser mentioned that the witnessing girl is eight, but other sources, like Hawaii News Now and People, claim she is 11.
On the day of the tragic incident, police found the body of the murderer. As per Hawaii News Now, Jason, the 44-year-old husband, had taken his own life.
Media reports say only two days before the incident, a court had issued a restraining order against Jason, instructing him to stay away from Theresa Cachuela and her children. Cachuela had filed the request a few weeks prior, citing violence from her husband, who had threatened to commit suicide in front of their children and had threatened her with a knife. Cachuela stated in her application that her husband had repeatedly ignored her pleas to leave the family alone. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that Jason had also stalked Cachuela.
Cachuela's mother, Lucita Ani-Nihoa, has spoken out about the tragedy, revealing that the husband had threatened her daughter's life and wouldn't accept Cachuela's decision to leave him.
"She wanted to leave him, but he wouldn't accept it. He tried to control her in every way... where she would go, what she would do. (...) She tried to report all these situations involving a gun, which he had pulled on her multiple times. He threatened to kill her," said the grieving mother, quoted by Hawaii News Now.
Ani-Nihoa believes the tragedy could have been prevented but feels the system failed her daughter.
"They never arrested him, knowing that he had a gun, that he threatened her, threatened to kill her and the children in her garage. The court didn't stand up for her. The system failed her, and now she is gone," said the influencer's mother.
Quoted by Hawaii News Now, the bereaved mother confessed that on the day of the tragedy, she was supposed to meet her daughter at the shopping center. She also shared that the youngest daughter of the influencer "witnessed everything," which was highly traumatic for her. The young girl is still struggling to accept that her mother is gone.
