Honey-mustard twist reinvents classic sauerkraut slaw

Sauerkraut slaw is a classic addition to many dishes. However, it turns out that a few small modifications can completely transform its taste and give it an unexpected new character. When my mom added two teaspoons of honey and mustard to the slaw, I was initially skeptical that such a dressing could perfectly complement the tangy cabbage. But after trying it, I had no doubts—it was a perfect match.

Sauerkraut slaw is tangy, crunchy, and perfectly paired with traditional dishes. Although it seems like nothing could surprise us, small additions can completely change its character. My mom discovered a simple way to enhance the flavor—just two teaspoons of an unusual dressing turned the classic slaw into an absolute hit at family dinners.

Recipe for sauerkraut slaw with honey-mustard dressing

This version of sauerkraut slaw with honey-mustard dressing proves that sometimes small changes in a recipe can bring amazing results. It's a blend of tradition with a touch of modernity that surprises with flavor and fits perfectly into both everyday and festive menus.

Ingredients:

  • 10.5 oz sauerkraut
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 tangy apple
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper (to taste)

Preparation:

  1. Finely chop the sauerkraut if it's too long, and place it in a bowl.
  2. Peel the red onion, cut it into thin slices, and add it to the sauerkraut.
  3. Grate the carrot and apple using a large-hole grater, then mix with the other ingredients.
  4. In a separate bowl, prepare the dressing by mixing honey, mustard, olive oil, and lemon juice, then seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the dressing over the slaw and mix thoroughly. Let it sit for 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Why you should try this version of slaw?

Adding honey and mustard to the traditional slaw gives it an exceptional depth of flavor. Dijon mustard emphasizes the tanginess of the cabbage, while honey adds a gentle sweetness that balances the dish. This combination makes the slaw more expressive and pairs excellently with both meat and vegetarian dishes. If you want to surprise your guests during dinner or a family meal, this slaw is the perfect choice.
