Holiday leftovers: Creative storage solutions beyond the fridge
Before the holidays, it's already challenging to find free space in the fridge. Initially, we purchased the ingredients needed to prepare the meals. After the holidays, we must store the leftovers from our festive feasts. As a result, the fridge and freezer often become "bursting at the seams." So, how should food be stored in these situations?
During Christmas, our homes transform into hubs of celebration, featuring a beautiful Christmas tree and a table laden with delicious dishes. However, the holidays soon end, and we encounter the problem of storing dishes and foods that no longer fit in the fridge or freezer. Fortunately, there are a few practical solutions to manage this.
On the balcony or window ledge
We often treat the balcony as an extension of the fridge. It's important to remember that food placed there, such as salads or borscht, should be well protected from the wind and animals. Sealable containers or additional foil can be very helpful. While the balcony can be quite useful, it's crucial not to store food there for too long. Changing weather conditions and irregular sunlight can contribute to food spoilage, posing a risk of food poisoning.
A window ledge can be an alternative if a balcony isn't available. If it's wide enough, food can be placed on it. It's important to ensure stable placement and secure dishes against unwanted factors.
In search of cool places
Other places where excess holiday food can be stored include the basement, garage, or attic. These areas are typically cooler than the rest of the house, which helps prolong the freshness of dishes. Properly securing the food in these locations is also essential.
