He‑Man's fate hangs in the balance: uncertainty surrounds iconic superhero movie
Netflix aimed to reboot "Masters of the Universe" with He-Man as the primary character. However, after reassessing its financial commitments, the company decided against it. While another producer has shown interest in the project, its future still remains unknown.
He-Man first appeared in the late 1970s as a Mattel action figure before making his way into comics and a popular animated series. In 1987, he featured in his first full-length film, "Masters of the Universe," with Dolph Lundgren in the lead role.
In the original storyline, He-Man, named Adam, is the prince of the planet Eternia. Occasionally, he fights the malevolent Skeletor and his minions. When he battles, he says: "by the power of Grayskull… I have the power! " to gain super strength and muscularity.
For three years, Netflix invested time and resources into reviving the story of He-Man. The title role was set to be played by Kyle Allen ("West Side Story", "Ghosts in Venice"). Having already spent $30 million on the project, Netflix halted production.
According to "Variety," Amazon MGM Studios has displayed an interest in "Masters of the Universe" and has reached out to Mattel and the project's previous screenwriters, Adam and Aaron Nee. However, negotiations are reportedly slow, reducing the likelihood of the filming's start in 2024.
The producers may plan to release the film in theaters before it is streaming. Up to now, none of the parties involved have provided official comments.
