Hawaii surf legend Tamayo Perry dies in tragic shark attack

On Sunday (June 23), actor Tamayo Perry was attacked by a shark while surfing off the coast of Hawaii. Friends found the 49-year-old with severed arms and a leg. Despite immediate assistance, he could not be saved.

Tamayo Perry was surfing on Sunday (June 23) with friends near Malaekahana Beach off the coast of the island of Oahu in Hawaii when the shark attack occurred around 1 PM.

Friends found the 49-year-old. Despite immediate assistance, the injuries were too extensive. He was pulled out of the ocean with severed arms and a leg.

Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected, [he] grew up right over here, and just a great member of our ocean safety team – said Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

Tamayo Perry has been a lifeguard on Hawaii's North Shore since 2016. In his free time, he indulged in his hobby, surfing. The mayor of Honolulu called Perry's death a tragic loss.

Perry was a stuntman and actor. He appeared in the fourth part of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011). He also played in the series Lost and Hawaii Five-0 and in films including Blue Crush, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, and The Big Bounce.

Tamayo was born and raised in the eastern part of the island of Oahu. He began surfing at the age of 12 and, over several years, became a living legend of the sport. He was married. Their love of water sports united Tamayo and Emilia. Together, they ran the Oahu Surfing Experience business.
