Reports of the appointment of Gen. Sergei Surovikin's successor are coming from several sources, including the Russian propaganda agency RIA Novosti and the Ukrainian news agency Unian.

Changes in the Russian army

"Gen. Col. Wiktor Afzałow has been appointed as the head of the Air and Space Forces of the Russian Federation" - the Russians announced in a statement.

Afzalov was to take over this position after the dismissal of Gen. Sergei Surovikin. The Russian Ministry of National Defense does not officially mention this.

After the failed coup attempt of Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner Group, Sergei Surovikin disappeared from public life. According to some reports, Russian services were investigating his possible connections with Prigozhin's coup.

Russian journalists reported that Surowikin was under house arrest until a decision was made about his future. His first picture in a long time appeared online on September 4, and information about him disappeared from the defense department's website. On September 15, his pictures taken in Algeria emerged. He was supposed to become the head of the air defense coordination committee.
