In response, Trump blocked the transfer of $2.2 billion to the university and also threatened to challenge the university's status as a tax-exempt organization.
Harvard's Provost Alan M. Garber said that the president's decision could have very far-reaching scientific consequences for the university. The White House responded by criticizing Harvard as an institution weighed down by bureaucracy and administrators, accusing it of benefiting financially at the expense of American families.
Harvard authorities want to block Trump's decision
The authorities of Harvard University want the U.S. federal court to block President Donald Trump's decision to withhold $2.2 billion in budget subsidies. On Monday (April 21), the university filed a lawsuit, demanding the return of the blocked funds.
According to Harvard scientists, cited by the BBC, the blockade of funds could result, among other things, in the halting of research on childhood cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease.
Harvard University is not the only institution that Donald Trump wants to challenge. The president has suspended $1 billion to Cornell University and $510 million to Brown University. Meanwhile, Columbia University agreed to modify its programs after a $400 million grant was blocked.
