On October 7th, Hamas terrorists who attacked Israel were equipped with captagon. It is a synthetic stimulant that reduces anxiety, sharpens senses, and improves endurance. The substance, often referred to as "cocaine for the poor," was found on the bodies of the terrorists. Israeli media are reminding us why it is so popular in the Middle East.

"It is cheap and easy to produce" - wrote the Jerusalem Post. It highlighted that Captagon is used not only by civilians, but also by members of various military groups, who become even more dangerous in their actions due to the effect of this drug.

"Captagon used by terrorists"

Captagon first made noise a decade ago when it turned out that ISIS terrorists were using it before a fight.

This is a drug that specialists classify as a stimulant (psychostimulant). Its history dates back to the 1960s when it was categorized as a medicine (including for depression and ADHD). Over time, it was noticed that prolonged use is highly addictive and therefore the use of Captagon in medicine was discontinued.

Currently, the largest global producer of captagon is Syria. It is suspected that the Syrian dictator's family and Hezbollah are involved in the production and trade, and the profits flowing into Syria significantly exceed those from legal exports. Revenues are difficult to estimate, but consumption is on the rise. In Saudi Arabia, it is suspected that consumption now exceeds 600 million tablets annually, which suggests that between 9-12 billion was paid on the street for them.

Media investigations, including those conducted by "The New York Times", and earlier reports from other media suggest that Middle Eastern terrorist organizations are using money earned from trading Captagon tablets to fund their activities.

Captagon comes in the form of small, (usually) white tablets. Its composition includes ingredients like caffeine and amphetamine. Countries in the Mediterranean basin, and even Dubai, have seized very large shipments of this drug on several occasions.
