Automotive YouTuber Alex Choi gained a massive following thanks to his car-focused videos. His channel has nearly a million subscribers. In June 2023, Choi hired a helicopter pilot and drone operators to film a "crazy, chaotic fireworks show." A recording was made in which two young women from the helicopter were shooting fireworks at a Lamborghini driving on a dry lake bed.
Youtuber with an arrest warrant for dangerous video
On June 4, 2024, charges of suspected criminal activity were brought against Alex Choi, and a federal warrant for the YouTuber's arrest was issued. He is accused of "causing an explosive or incendiary device to be placed on an aircraft."
Although he did not shoot the fireworks from the helicopter, the authorities concluded they have "reasonable grounds" to believe that Choi committed the alleged crime. The YouTuber has repeatedly admitted in the video that he is the "mastermind" behind the idea and execution of the video in the style of the "Grand Theft Auto" game.
Serious consequences of a dangerous idea
Using the tire tracks from the drifting Lamborghini, investigators determined that the video was shot on the dry lake bed of El Mirage in California, which is federal property.
The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revoked the helicopter pilot's license for participating in the recording. The justification was that the low altitude at which he was flying and the fireworks launched from the aircraft posed a danger. According to the portal dexerto.com, Alex Choi has not yet commented on the charges brought against him.
