In many significant aspects, the war in Ukraine is being fought in the domain of technology. More than anything, the Ukrainian military is endeavoring to gain a technological edge over their adversary.
Firstly, they are receiving more efficient western equipment for use on the battlefield. They also have access to superior technological expertise.
Significance of drones on the battlefield
Drones have become lethal tools on the Ukrainian front. Initially, a lot was said about the Turkish Bayraktars assisting the armed forces in locating and eliminating Russian targets. Similarly, Putin's forces are harnessing flying devices - employing Iranian kamikaze drones.
Aside from surveying the area and locating targets, drones can also destroy them if equipped with an explosive charge. Footage of such operations have made rounds on the internet multiple times. Drones are touted to be the weapon of the future, yet the revolution on the battlefield is already unfolding, and it's prominently visible in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Ukraine's new weapon
The Ukrainian military is focusing on ingenuity. For several months, they have been developing what are known as ground drones.
These devices function similarly to their airborne counterparts. The Ukrainian Front profile, quoting Russian soldiers, reports that these machines are remotely controlled. Nimble and quiet, these land platforms approach the enemy and, once the heat sensors mounted on them detect a target, they promptly explode. The Ukrainians also employ aerial kamikazes.
Under the yellow-blue flag, military technological advancement is taking place as part of the Brave 1 project. It's a collaborative platform involving Ukrainian authorities, defense-related technology companies, investors, and foundations. They're collectively working to bring Ukraine closer to victory in the war.
The primary goal of the project is to expedite the introduction of innovations in artificial intelligence, satellite data usage, unmanned aerial vehicles, and situational awareness systems. Experts argue that having a technological advantage is crucial for Ukraine to defeat Russia.
