Greta Gerwig teases potential "Barbie 2" sequel plans
"Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, led a worldwide pink revolution, joining the exclusive club of billion-dollar box office hits. So, what's next? Will there be a sequel?
"Barbie" premiered on July 21, 2023, coinciding with the release of "Oppenheimer." The simultaneous debut of these two vastly different but highly anticipated films created quite a buzz in the entertainment world. This phenomenon drew even sceptics to the theatres, eager to see the excitement. "Barbie" surpassed all expectations, grossing a total of $1.44 billion worldwide, with $809 million coming from international markets.
"Barbie" encore: are we getting a sequel?
Following the film's premiere, Greta Gerwig was asked about the possibility of a sequel. The director did not rule it out, acknowledging the difficulty of closing the door on a follow-up when the film has earned a billion dollars so quickly. "My guide is what I deeply love and care about," Gerwig explained. "My North Star is, what do I deeply love? What do I really care about? What’s the story underneath this story? If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more."
According to the "Hollywood Reporter," Greta Gerwig and her partner, director Noah Baumbach, who co-wrote "Barbie," have discovered a story they want to tell in "Barbie 2." Reports indicate the project has already been sold to Warner Bros. Although there is a concept, no official confirmation has been made, as the studio is avoiding official comments on the matter. However, "Hollywood Reporter" remains optimistic, noting that both Baumbach and Gerwig work quickly and efficiently, so fans might not have to wait long for "Barbie 2."
Additionally, Greta Gerwig is currently working on a continuation of another beloved series. After many years, we're set to return to "The Chronicles of Narnia!" Gerwig recently commented, "I haven't even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I'm properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start. I think when I'm scared, it's always a good sign."
