Greenland beckons: economic ties with the USA, not integration
Greenland does not want to become a part of the USA, but it is open to economic cooperation. Minister Naaja Nathanielsen invites American companies to invest in the island's mineral resources. Greenland has 39 of the 50 minerals considered critical by the USA.
The Minister of Business, Trade, and Mineral Resources of Greenland, Naaja Nathanielsen, emphasized in an article for "The Washington Post" that the island is not striving for integration with the USA, but is ready for economic cooperation.
According to "Kommiersant," Greenland possesses 39 of the 50 minerals considered critical by the USA, which makes it an attractive partner.
Nathanielsen invited American companies to invest, highlighting that currently, most mineral extraction licenses are held by companies from Canada and the United Kingdom.
The USA holds only one license, but the minister expressed confidence that the situation may change. Cooperation in this area has been ongoing since 2019, when an agreement was signed during Donald Trump's presidency.
Controversies around the USA's plans
Since the end of 2024, Donald Trump has expressed interest in having control over Greenland, considering it a matter of national security.
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, emphasized that decisions about the island's future belong to its residents. According to "Politico," Trump sees potential benefits for American businesses in Greenland's resources.
