This information shocked the entire golf community. In recent days, Grayson Murray had competed in a tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. However, on Friday (May 24), he decided to withdraw from further competition.
He did so when he had only two holes left to complete the tournament. Murray cited feelings of poor health as his reason for the decision. No one suspected that a tragedy would ensue.
The day after the golfer's death, Murray's parents released a statement on social media. They revealed that their son had committed suicide.
"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. He was loved and he will be missed. Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," the statement read.
It is worth mentioning that the 30-year-old had struggled with depression, anxiety, and alcoholism. He spoke about these issues publicly many times. However, he was not able to overcome them.
Murray turned professional in 2015. He celebrated his first PGA Tour title in July 2017 in Kentucky, where he won the Barbasol Championship. In contrast, in January 2024, he triumphed at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He rose to a career-high 46th position in the world rankings after that success.
