The increase in wholesale prices in Germany in January 2025 was 0.9 percent compared to December 2024. This is the largest jump since April 2023.

Wholesalers, being a key link between producers and consumers, pass on price changes with a delay. Inflation in January in Germany was 2.3 percent, which is slightly lower than the 2.6 percent in December.

Rise in food prices in Germany. Most expensive in two years

At the beginning of the year, prices for coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices increased significantly, being 34.4 percent more expensive than in January 2024. Sugar, confectionery, and bakery products rose by 11 percent.

Milk, dairy products, eggs, as well as edible oils and fats cost 7 percent more. In contrast, prices for iron, steel, and semi-finished products fell by 6.3 percent, and those for peripheral devices by 6.2 percent.

The German Association of Wholesale, Foreign Trade, and Services (BGA) predicts stagnation in turnover for 2025, considering inflation. Two-thirds of wholesalers reported a decline in sales over the last six months.

Additionally, a 40 percent group of wholesale sellers expects a further decline this year. "I have never seen worse data," said BGA President Dirk Jandura about the survey conducted among member companies of the association.
