German envoy issues stark warning on Trump, Musk influence
German Ambassador Andreas Michaelis warns about the consequences of Donald Trump and Elon Musk's influence in the USA. A document dated January 14 points to potential changes in the constitutional order and threats to democracy.
The German ambassador, Andreas Michaelis, expressed concerns about the future of the United States under the leadership of Donald Trump and Elon Musk in a document dated January 14. This document, as reported by Reuters, indicates possible changes in the constitutional order of the USA, which could lead to a "maximum concentration of power in the hands of the president at the expense of Congress and federal states."
Threats to democracy
"Basic democratic principles and checks and balances will be largely undermined, the legislature, law enforcement and media will be robbed of their independence and misused as a political arm, Big Tech will be given co-governing power," the document states.
Michaelis emphasizes that control over the Department of Justice and the FBI is crucial for Trump in achieving his political and personal goals, such as mass deportations and revenge on alleged enemies. The ambassador also foresees a "redefinition of the First Amendment," which may affect freedom of speech and the press.
Actions against critics
According to the document, Trump and Musk are already acting against critics and media companies that do not cooperate with them. One method involves filing lawsuits, threatening criminal proceedings, and revoking licenses, while another involves manipulating algorithms and blocking accounts.
In official statements, the German Foreign Ministry highlighted that Donald Trump was elected through democratic processes in the USA and expressed its commitment to collaborating with the new US administration to benefit Germany and Europe. At the same time, German media reported that Elon Musk’s support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has provoked significant backlash in Berlin.
All these events are taking place in the context of the upcoming snap elections to the Bundestag, further heightening Germany's political atmosphere. The outgoing government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refrained from directly criticizing Trump. Still, according to the media, the ambassador's confidential assessment reflects the candid view of a high-ranking German official.
