Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, most Germans have grown accustomed to their safety being guaranteed through cooperation with Russia and the booming market of China.

"Even today, Scholz, a social democrat traditionally favoring strong ties with Moscow, appears hesitant to discuss direct confrontations with Russia or China," reports the newspaper.

Boris Pistorius assumed the role of Defense Minister a year ago and has repeatedly cautioned Germans to "prepare for war" since then.

In his assessment, Vladimir Putin is likely to mount an attack on the country within eight years.

Germany desires enhanced armament

Although Pistorius addressed interns at the military academy, he made it clear that his message was meant for a broader audience.

"Are we truly prepared to defend this country? And who constitutes this 'we'? We need to engage in this debate," he declared.

He further expressed that the peace and freedom Europe has relished over the past decades "are no longer guaranteed". He characterized the present geopolitical situation in the continent as a challenge "greater and more intense" than ever before.

Army fashioned on the American model

Pistorius asserts that Germany should consider permitting residents without German citizenship to enlist in the military with the aim of increasing its soldiers from 181,000 to 203,000 by 2031.

This might align closely with the American military model, where military service can pave the way for citizenship.

The German army needs 20,000 new recruits annually.

Europe gears up for potential war

Countries throughout Europe are assessing their resources to ensure preparedness against an adversary like Russia.

In the UK, conscription will not be reinstated. However, UK military chief of staff, Gen. Patrick Sanders emphasized that society should be ready for a state of war and be prepared to combat Russia.

In the meantime, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, along with the Baltic nations, are already undertaking advanced preparations to confront a potential Russian assault.
