As summer ends, potted plants need preparation for the fall and winter period. How should you care for geraniums? Proper maintenance is crucial; this includes trimming certain parts of the plant and watering, both of which are essential for surviving the winter.
Take care of your geraniums before winter. Here's how to store them for the next season
A step-by-step guide found on TikTok shows how to prepare geraniums for wintering. The first step is to remove the plant from the pot and clear the soil from between the roots. Then, prune any faded flowers and dry leaves.
Next, place the geranium in a box with the roots facing upwards. Store the plants in a cool place where the temperature stays just above freezing. Even if the leaves fall, don't worry. In spring, the plants will sprout new leaves and quickly rejuvenate, assures the author of the video.
This isn't the only method, though. The owner of the other account has a slightly different approach to geranium wintering. First, the video suggests removing all flowers, buds, and any dried leaves, a task to be repeated several times during winter. The geraniums, placed in a crate, are then sprayed with special solutions to prevent diseases and pests.
With geraniums prepared this way, you can leave them by a window, on a stairway, porch, or in a garage, as long as the temperature doesn't drop below freezing. I limit watering, as it's better for them to be too dry than too wet, and they wait for spring that way, says the creator of the video.
