  • General Carsten Breuer from the Bundeswehr assessed that Russia is gearing up for a large-scale war, with readiness possibly achieved by 2029.
  • Russia has doubled the number of soldiers and is reorienting its military structures toward the West, which could pose a threat to Europe.
  • Expert Carlo Masala stresses that Europe has only four years to prepare for defense against a potential conflict.

Is Russia preparing for war?

General Carsten Breuer from the Bundeswehr stated that Russia is intensively arming itself and doubling its number of soldiers. "Russia is clearly directing its military structures toward the West," noted Breuer during a program on ARD. In his view, the end of the war in Ukraine will not restore peace in Europe, and Russia will be ready for a large-scale war by 2029.

NATO must prepare

Military expert Carlo Masala, also appearing on the ARD program, expressed concern about the possibility of a conflict breaking out. "Russia is preparing for a great war," he assessed, "but it doesn't have to be a great war that comes immediately." He foresees a scenario where Russia may undertake hybrid actions, potentially leading to the occupation of a city under the pretext of protecting a Russian minority.

What are the chances of avoiding conflict?

Masala emphasizes that the speed of Europe's response is crucial. "Europe has not ten, but four years to prepare for defense," he highlighted. In light of this potential threat, NATO must assess whether to invoke the mutual assistance clause, which could escalate into a full-scale war with Russia.
