Geert Wilders' Freedom Party exits Dutch coalition over immigration

The far-right Freedom Party (PVV) led by Geert Wilders has exited the ruling coalition in the Netherlands, as reported by the NOS portal on Tuesday. Wilders had previously stated that he would leave the government if it did not implement stricter immigration policies.

Wilders' party, which won the elections in 2023 and holds the most seats in parliament, threatened on May 26 to dismantle the government "within weeks" if his demands for a significant reduction in immigrant numbers were not met.

Our patience is running out. Voters who supported the PVV deserve a government that fulfills its promises, said Wilders. He also called for increased border controls and the deportation of individuals with dual citizenship who have been convicted of crimes.

Let's not open more asylum centers. Let's close them, he added.

Wilders stated on the social media platform X that his Freedom Party (PVV) will leave the coalition due to a lack of backing for its asylum proposals.

The PVV has 37 deputies in the 150-seat Dutch parliament. Although recent polls indicate a drop in support for Wilders' group, it remains one of the three most popular parliamentary forces, alongside the Green and Labor Party alliance (GroenLinks/PvdA) and the liberal VVD.
