South America is long known for its extraordinary happenings, even on the soccer field. Every so often, there are explosive scandals that catch the attention of the entire world.
The present situation is no exception. According to Argentinian media, a scandal occurred during an amateur league match. The center of attention, surprisingly, was not the players but the referee.
Though the disturbing event is currently causing an uproar, it allegedly took place last week in the town of Scholler, in the province of Misiones. After being shoved by several players, 62-year-old Referee Remigio Armoa retaliated by pulling out a knife and attacking one of the players, stabbing him directly in the chest.
The assaulted player collapsed onto the field, sending shockwaves through the spectators. Some people recorded the incident. Immediately, his team members decided to remove him from the field.
Local media later identified the victim as Kevin A. The 21-year-old was rushed to the hospital with a punctured lung, but recent images show him recovering from this unfortunate incident.
"Kevin miraculously survived. It's a hard time for the family because he's seen as the local Messi. He's a young man with considerable soccer talent," said one of his family members, as quoted in Argentina.
Armoa has since been apprehended by the police, who have released his picture as confirmation. After initially attempting to escape, they now have him in custody, which could lead to more serious charges. The police have secured the knife belonging to the 62-year-old, and the case is currently under investigation.
