French Mirage 2000s set for Ukraine, but numbers limited

In early October this year, French authorities confirmed that preparations are underway to deliver Mirage 2000 fighters to Ukraine. However, they did not reveal detailed information, and current media reports suggest that only a few of these aircraft may reach the front lines.

The announcement regarding the transfer of Mirage 2000 fighters to Ukraine was made by the French Minister of Defense, Sébastien Lecornu, who stated that the aircraft will arrive at the front in the first quarter of 2025. An article in the economic daily "La Tribune" suggested that, contrary to Ukrainian expectations, the promised assistance might prove insignificant. This is not due to the fighters' capabilities, which remain substantial, but because of the limited inventory and the plans the French have for their air force.

How many Mirage 2000 fighters will Ukraine receive?

For the transfer to Ukraine, specific versions of the French fighters—Mirage 2000-5—are being considered. "La Tribune" reports that the French air force has 26 to 27 units (depending on the source of information), but they would like to retain at least one squadron. This means that it is possible that Ukraine will receive only six Mirage 2000-5 fighters.

The Ukrainian portal Defense Express has hopes for a larger transfer tied to the ambitions of French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron publicly referred to the Mirage 2000 fighters several months ago as a means to strengthen the Ukrainian army. It's possible that he will strive to create a "Mirage 2000-5 coalition," thereby acquiring additional fighters from other countries. However, the list of potential coalition partners is not extensive. According to French and Ukrainian media, the optimistic scenario for Ukraine is receiving 12 units of the Mirage 2000-5.

Mirage 2000-5 for Ukraine: heavily armed

The Mirage 2000-5 is an attack version of this French aircraft, developed in the 1990s based on the Mirage 2000N. The fighter, with its delta-wing configuration, measures over 46 feet in length, can achieve speeds of over 1,550 mph, and reach an altitude of 56,000 feet.

Ukraine is most likely to receive the Mirage 2000-5 in the D variant. This version is equipped with features such as an Antilope radar for terrain following, night vision goggles, and the Sabre electronic warfare (EW) system, along with robust armament. It includes two DEFA 554 cannons of 30 mm caliber and weapons carried on nine pylons. Altogether, this French fighter can carry over 13,200 pounds of armament, including SCALP-EG/Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu revealed that the Mirage 2000-5s being prepared for Ukraine will be adapted to "new air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons." Przemysław Juraszek, explained that this may involve AASM Hammer guided bombs or MBDA Meteor missiles.
