French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne expressed on Monday in Beijing his expectation for China to deliver "a very clear message to Russia" concerning the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has now lasted over two years.

"We expect China to send a very clear message to Russia," Sejourne stated during a press conference alongside his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

"Europeans will not feel secure unless there is peace in accordance with international law," he continued. He emphasized that China could play a "key role" in upholding international law.

The French minister also mentioned the necessity of a "balance of power favoring Ukraine."

AFP has reported that China is currently Russia's closest ally. In light of this, France is keen to enhance its relations with China.

According to the French news outlet RFI, "This visit by Sejourne marks the second time a French foreign minister has visited China in less than six months, following his predecessor, Catherine Colona, who was there in November."

Chinese President Xi Jinping is slated to visit France and Italy in May.
