France officially announces defense cooperation deal with Ukraine
France and Ukraine are set to begin joint production of drones on Ukrainian soil, a move aimed at bolstering the defence capabilities of both nations. The initiative underscores deepening military cooperation between Paris and Kyiv amid Russia’s ongoing invasion. The announcement was made by French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who framed the partnership as a strategic step toward enhancing technological self-reliance and battlefield resilience.
France and Ukraine will produce drones
France and Ukraine are expanding their defence partnership with a new agreement to jointly produce drones, French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced. The manufacturing will take place in Ukraine, marking a significant step forward in bilateral military collaboration.
The drones developed under this initiative will serve both the Ukrainian and French armed forces. While Ukraine is expected to deploy them on the battlefield, France plans to use the systems primarily for ongoing tactical and operational training—part of a broader effort to enhance the combat readiness of its military.
Although Defence Minister Lecornu did not provide specifics regarding the drone models or the manufacturers involved, he described the project as unprecedented in scope. The initiative will involve a major French automotive firm and a Ukrainian defence-sector company, signalling not only a deepening of bilateral ties but also a boost to Ukraine’s domestic military-industrial capabilities.
Support for Ukraine
Production of drones in Ukraine also supports the country in the context of its current geopolitical situation. Ukraine will be able to use modern technologies and also provide France with feedback on their use in combat conditions.
This initiative could lay the groundwork for further cooperation between France and Ukraine in the defence sector. Both countries can benefit from exchanging experiences and technologies, which will strengthen their position in the international arena.
