Even though four persons were on board the aircraft, only Sebastian Pinera succumbed. The others were successfully rescued.

A look back at Pinera's two terms

During Pinera's initial term in office, from 2010 to 2014, Chile experienced remarkable economic growth and decreased unemployment - an achievement that Reuters pointed out.

His subsequent term, from 2018 to 2022, was marred by severe protests against social inequality. Gabriel Boric succeeded him.
