Football mourns the loss of beloved coach Pepe Portoles at 69

Unfortunately, Portoles suffered a stroke recently, and his condition worsened in the following days. He was admitted to the hospital, where he ultimately passed away. This somber news broke in the Spanish media on Saturday, May 4th, marking the loss of the coach at the age of 69.

Worked all over the world

Pepe Portoles had a distinguished stint at Real Madrid. In the 90s, as part of Benito Floro's coaching staff, he was tasked with the players' physical conditioning. "The Royals" have expressed deep sorrow over losing their former colleague.

"Real Madrid, the president, and the entire board mourn the death of Pepe Portoles, the physical conditioning coach at our club from 1992 to 1994. During his tenure at Real, he was part of the team that won the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España. Real extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to his family, colleagues, and all loved ones. May he rest in peace." - reads a statement from the club's website.

Portoles also lent his expertise to teams such as Albacete, Villarreal, Real Mallorca, and Sporting Gijon as a physical conditioning coach. Eventually transitioning to sports director, he continued to traverse the globe.

Portoles' career portfolio boasts roles at prestigious clubs like Millonarios in Colombia, Vissel Kobe in Japan, Palm Beach Premier in the USA, Ludogorets Razgrad, and Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia. He even contributed to the Costa Rica national team and directed a sports school in Valencia.
