Flaxseed, also known as linseed, is a superfood. It positively affects digestion and skin appearance, helps lower cholesterol levels, and aids in shedding unnecessary pounds. The list of health benefits of flaxseed is extensive, but how and when should you consume these golden seeds to get the most out of them?

Flaxseed is a source of dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and many vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc. These tiny seeds hold significant power, but knowing how to consume them is essential to maximize their benefits. Additionally, the time of day also matters.

How to consume flaxseed?

Raw or brewed, whole or ground – there are many dilemmas regarding how to consume these precious seeds. In reality, each method has its advantages. The human body absorbs flaxseed better when it is ground. It is worth noting that grinding should occur just before consumption, as the fats in the seeds quickly evaporate and lose a significant portion of their properties. Another critical point is that ground flaxseed should be consumed raw – not soaked in boiling water or cooked in this form. It is best to add it to a salad, sandwich, smoothie, or prepare flax porridge.

Whole seeds are suitable for cooking. Soaking them in warm water (preferably at room temperature) creates a beneficial mucilage. Cushing the seeds for mucilage preparation is unnecessary because the mucus is found in their outer layer and quickly passes into the water. Drinking the prepared mucilage along with the seeds is beneficial, and it is good to chew them to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients. However, it should be remembered that when incorporating flaxseed into your diet, you should increase your water intake. Otherwise, you might experience the opposite effect and suffer from constipation.

When to consume flaxseed?

Flaxseed can be consumed in the morning and evening, as these seeds positively influence the body's functioning regardless of the time. Individuals suffering from stomach issues should choose morning doses of flaxseed. Seeds consumed on an empty stomach will alleviate heartburn, acidity, and stomach pain and provide a feeling of fullness.

On the other hand, those who have a problem with nighttime snacking should consume flaxseed in the evening. This is also a good time for those struggling with digestive issues and constipation. It is also worth knowing that flax seeds contain tryptophan – an amino acid necessary to maintain the body's proper daily rhythm, sleep, and wakefulness – ensuring a healthy sleep. Additionally, flaxseed mucilage consumed in the evening will help avoid nighttime dry cough attacks.
