Tragic news from the tourist paradise
The fire erupted on the fifth floor of a six-story building located on the popular Khao San Road, where tourists from various parts of the world often stay. At the time the fire started, there were 75 people in the accommodation facility.
According to Sanong Saengmanee, a local police colonel, all three individuals who perished in the fire on Sunday evening were foreign tourists. In addition to the three fatalities, local media also report seven people were injured. Among them are five foreign tourists and two Thai citizens.
The fire was eventually extinguished, but the causes remain unknown. Authorities will investigate the matter. Additionally, local officials urge caution during the New Year holidays and New Year's Eve celebrations, especially when using firecrackers and fireworks.
Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khao San Road Business Association, arrived at the scene. The association promotes the street and the region and ensures safety. "Now everybody’s scared about what happened and they’re scared it will affect the event tomorrow. But definitely there’s no worry because we already had a meeting with the police station and we have over 150 police and district staff to cover on Khao San Road for security," he said, as quoted by the Evening Standard.
