Finland urges Europe to strategize for future talks with Russia
During his visit to London, the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, emphasized that Moscow will remain an inseparable part of European reality, regardless of current conflicts. He highlighted the need for Europe to prepare for future talks with Russia.
In London, President of Finland Alexander Stubb reiterated the importance of preparing for future dialogue with Russia. He emphasized that despite tense relations with Moscow, Russia will always be Finland's neighbor. This necessitates a long-term strategy and readiness for talks when the appropriate time arrives.
Stubb noted that any potential contact with Vladimir Putin should be carefully coordinated at the international level. After meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he stressed that the condition for dialogue is a sustainable ceasefire and stable peace in Ukraine.
The Finnish president also summarized his recent diplomatic activities, including a visit to the United States, where he held talks with former President Donald Trump and met with French President Emmanuel Macron. He mentioned that further sanctions against Russia will depend on compliance with the conditions of a potential ceasefire.
Finland on the war in Ukraine
Commenting on discussions in the U.S., Stubb noted that Trump considers sanctions a powerful means of applying pressure. In this context, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is preparing a new package of sanctions in case Russia does not comply with the ceasefire conditions.
Finland, meanwhile, proposed a date for a full ceasefire in Ukraine on April 20, which would have symbolic significance with the upcoming Easter holidays.
The Finnish president also expressed satisfaction with the UK's declarations regarding strengthening cooperation with Europe post-Brexit. London, as one of the first countries, declared readiness to send troops to Ukraine to ensure its security once peace is established.
