Family turmoil as soldier's death sparks payout dispute

The death of a Russian soldier at the front of the war with Ukraine has unleashed chaos within his family. The man's wife concealed the fact that she had divorced him to collect money from a posthumous settlement, while the soldier's mother did not receive any funds. The Russian authorities have become involved in the dispute.

Some Russians view the war with Ukraine as an opportunity to earn money, causing financial motivations to overshadow other considerations, even in the face of death. An example of this is the situation involving a soldier from Krasnoyarsk.

The man died in the war, and his ex-wife approached the state administration for a payout of 1,200,000 rubles (approximately $10,000). This is the compensation amount for the man's death. The issue is that the woman was not entitled to these funds. Russian authorities believe the woman hid her divorce from the deceased to obtain the money fraudulently.

According to the independent portal Sibreal.org, the issue came to light when the deceased soldier's mother reported the matter to the prosecutor's office in Russia. She also wanted to receive money for her son's death and discovered her former daughter-in-law had already received the funds.

The woman defends herself by claiming she was unaware of the divorce from her husband. However, investigators questioned her explanation because the ex-wife had previously filed for child support from the soldier. The case is ongoing. The soldier's mother has still not received the funds she was supposed to get from the Russian state and currently remains without any financial support.

Russians whose relatives died in the war with Ukraine can demand a presidential payout and an insurance payout. Often, mourning takes a backseat, and money becomes the primary focus. Sibreal.org reports that numerous families argue over money, leading their disputes to end in court.
