According to Ukrainian sources, this particular F-16 returned to base after launching five AIM-9 missiles to neutralize enemy drones. Each missile was reported to have hit its target, demonstrating the F-16's effectiveness and the crucial role these aircraft play in maintaining safety over the partially occupied country.

"Morning of May 6, 2025. Shahed hunters returning home… Only one missile left under this F-16’s wing — which means five AIM-9s found their targets," declared the press service of the Ukrainian Air Force.

In the massive attack described by Ukrainian sources, the Russians used a total of 136 assault and decoy drones targeting various regions of Ukraine.

"This operation highlights the critical role of the F-16 fighters in Ukraine's air defence strategy. Despite operating older models with limited radar capabilities and shorter-range missiles, Ukrainian pilots have demonstrated exceptional skill and adaptability," wrote analysts from Defence Express.

Important elements of the Ukrainian Air Force

Missiles from the AIM-9 Sidewinder family are widely used in NATO aviation as short-range air-to-air missiles. Ukraine has also received them in the latest version, the AIM-9X Sidewinder.

As for the F-16 fighters themselves, Western allies are supplying Ukraine with modified versions of the F-16A/B MLU (Mid-Life Update from the 1990s). Compared to older variants, they have better radars and provide the ability to use a wider range of mounted weaponry. They come standard with a built-in six-barrel 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon.

The capabilities of the F-16 are praised by Ukrainian pilots, who also emphasize their effectiveness in encounters with Russian forces. Besides combating Russian targets, American fighter jets also provide air cover for other Ukrainian aircraft. These mainly include MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters, as well as Su-25 attack aircraft.
