The causes of the explosion remain unknown. According to the spokesperson for the Indonesian army, Gen. Kristomei Sianturi, it happened when soldiers were removing ammunition that was expired or otherwise no longer suitable for use. Following the initial explosion, another occurred, worsening the tragic outcome of the event.

Gen. Kristomei Sianturi noted that the clearing of military warehouses often attracts the attention of local residents who collect metal fragments.

The investigation into the causes of the explosion is ongoing. The Indonesian authorities have committed to thoroughly examining the circumstances of the accident to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
